When all this started, I asked myself, 'Am I going to withdraw from the world, like most people do, or am I going to live?' I decided I'm going to live---or at least try to live---the way I want, with dignity, with courage, with humor, with composure.

About This Quote

When all this started, I asked myself, “Am I going to withdraw from the world, like most people do, or am I going to live?”I decided I’m going to live—or at least try to live—the way I want.” The poet Anne Sexton was born in 1918 and died in 1974. Sexton's father committed suicide when she was a child and she described this event in her poem "Morning Song." She was 7 years old. In this poem she talks about how she imagines living her life after the death of her father. She talks about how she will spend her time after his death.

Sexton says she will go to a place where nobody knows who she is and nobody cares who she is. She will make friends with a person who has a secret and they can be together forever. Some of these people are just like her and some of them are not.

That's when it becomes important to be able to live with dignity, courage, humor and composure in order to be able to live that kind of life.
